### **Introduction**
I've always had a fascination with people who are interesting.
To me they're like walking magnets; they have this aura about them that pulls you in whether you want it or not.
But what exactly makes them so interesting? What do they know that I don't? How can I become more interesting too?
I decided to investigate.
I was curious about what makes them so magnetic.
And so began my quest.
### **Research**
I started off by looking at some popular books that talked about being interesting:
1) [The Charisma Myth](https://www.amazon.com/Charisma-Myth-Secrets-Creating-Like/dp/1591844907) by Olivia Fox Cabane
2) [How To Win Friends And Influence People](https://www.amazon.com/How-Win-Friends-Influence-People/dp/0671027034) by Dale Carnegie
Both books provided good advice but neither really helped me answer my questions.
They were more focused on developing social skills rather than understanding why certain people are naturally more interesting than others.
So then I turned my attention towards psychology research papers instead.
After reading through dozens (if not hundreds) of articles I found myself getting overwhelmed by all the information out there.
There seemed no clear consensus among experts regarding what makes someone interesting or uninteresting either!
So instead I decided it would be best just stick with common sense principles when trying figure out how someone becomes interesting:
1) They're knowledgeable about topics outside their field
2) They have unique perspectives
3) They're open-minded
### **Experimentation**
Now that I had some ideas about what makes someone interesting I decided it was time for some experimentation!
I started off by talking more about topics outside my field at work:
* Politics
* Sports
* Movies
* Books
* Travel
I also tried listening more carefully when others were speaking so that I could learn from them instead of just waiting my turn in conversations (this helped me gain new perspectives).
Finally I made an effort not only accept but embrace differences between people which allowed me become more open-minded over time.
### **Conclusion**
After months of experimentation I noticed something strange happening:
People started asking me more questions about myself!
They wanted me share my thoughts opinions experiences stories etc...
It was like suddenly everyone wanted hear what I had say!
So what changed?
Well according [to research](https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-happiness-project/201506/the-psychology-interesting-people):
People find others interesting when they feel connected emotionally connected intellectually challenged or inspired somehow by them.
In other words if someone makes us think feel something different then we tend find them more interesting regardless whether we agree disagree or simply enjoy hearing what they have say!
So there you have it folks my secret recipe for becoming an interesting person:
1) Be knowledgeable about topics outside your field
2) Have unique perspectives
3) Be open-minded
And most importantly don't forget have fun along way!
**Happy experimenting!**<|repo_name|>aralycia/aralycia.github.io<|file_sep|>/_posts/2020-05-21-Happy-Birthday-Mom.md
